Most people come to Egypt for what the pharaohs built. This one is about what nobody built. Three hundred and fifty kilometres south-west of Cairo, the Western Desert opens into a plain of white chalk carved by wind into mushrooms, towers and animals — and this private white desert tour puts you in the middle of it for two nights, sleeping on the sand.
The chalk is the floor of a sea that covered this part of Africa eighty million years ago. Wind has been working on it ever since. What is left stands two, three, sometimes six metres high, blinding at midday and gold at sunset, scattered across the plain like a sculpture park nobody curated.
You travel by air-conditioned vehicle to Bahariya Oasis, then transfer to a 4x4 with a Bedouin driver-guide who has been running this route for years. Tents, mattresses, blankets, winter sleeping bags, all meals and the National Park fees are included — you bring a bag and a torch.

Day 1 — Early pickup in Cairo and the drive to Bahariya Oasis
Your guide collects you from your Cairo hotel between 6:30 and 7:00 AM. The road runs south-west into the Western Desert, and the change is gradual: suburbs, then farmland, then nothing at all but flat gravel plain for three hours until the palm groves of Bahariya Oasis appear.
Day 1 — Crystal Mountain and the Black Desert
Past Bahariya the landscape turns strange. Crystal Mountain is a low ridge of quartz calcite that glitters when the sun hits it, small enough to walk around in ten minutes and unlike anything else on the route. Then comes the Black Desert: hundreds of low hills capped with dark volcanic rubble, the residue of eruptions that stopped millions of years ago.
Day 1 — Sunset over the White Desert and your first night at camp
You reach the White Desert in the late afternoon, which is when the chalk stops being white and turns gold, then pink. Your Bedouin crew sets up camp among the formations while you walk. Dinner is cooked over the fire, and with no town within a hundred kilometres the night sky is as good as it gets in Egypt.
Day 2 — A full day inside White Desert National Park
A full day inside White Desert National Park with no schedule to keep. The chalk here has been carved by wind into shapes people have named over the years: the Mushroom, the Chicken, ridges that look like crouching sphinxes. Your guide takes you to the formations that are worth the walk and away from the ones every convoy stops at. Second night at camp.
Day 3 — Hot spring in Bahariya and the road back to Cairo
After breakfast you drive back through Bahariya, with a stop at one of the oasis hot springs if you want the shower. You reach Cairo between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, depending on traffic on the ring road.

Is camping in the White Desert safe?
Yes. It is an established route run daily by local Bedouin crews, inside a national park, with a guide who carries water, spare fuel and a satellite phone. The main thing to prepare for is the cold at night, not risk.
How cold does it get at night?
Between December and February the desert can drop close to freezing once the sun goes down. Winter sleeping bags and layered blankets are provided; bring a fleece, warm socks and a hat and you will be comfortable.
