Overview

Thousands of people fly into Hurghada every week for the Red Sea and go home without seeing a single temple. This nile cruise from hurghada fixes that in one booking: a four-hour drive west to Luxor, six nights sailing south to Aswan on a traditional dahabiya, and a transfer back to your beach hotel at the end.

Your dahabiya under sail on the Nile cruise from Hurghada

A dahabiya is a wooden sailing boat with about a dozen guests. It moves with the wind and the current rather than a diesel schedule, and it moors at places the 150-cabin ships physically cannot reach. That is the difference between seeing the Nile and passing it.

Why Sail Rather Than Take a Day Trip?

Hurghada to Luxor and back in a single day is a real option and we run it — but it is roughly eight hours of driving for six hours of sightseeing. A nile cruise from hurghada spends those same road hours once each way and gives you six nights on the river in between.

What the small boat buys you is the middle of the route. El Kab, a walled town from the first dynasties with painted tombs in the cliff above it. Gebel el-Silsila, the quarry that supplied the sandstone for Karnak, Luxor Temple and Edfu, with the chisel marks still in the rock. A night moored at Bisaw Island with nothing else on the water. None of these appear on a standard cruise itinerary.

The headline sites are all there too: Karnak on the first afternoon, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut on day two, Edfu and Kom Ombo as you sail, and Philae and the High Dam at Aswan on day six.

Good to Know Before You Sail

October to April is the season. In those months Upper Egypt is warm and dry and the deck is comfortable all day. From June to August the afternoons are genuinely hot, excursions move to early morning and late afternoon, and prices drop accordingly — a fair trade for some travellers and not for others.

The transfer is four hours each way on a good desert road. It is done in a private air-conditioned vehicle with stops, not a coach. Bring your passport for the checkpoints.

Cabins on this nile cruise from hurghada are en suite and air-conditioned, and full board includes soft drinks, tea, coffee and water; alcohol is extra. Pack light, bring closed shoes for the tombs and a layer for the deck after dark. For entry rules and site information see Egypt’s official monuments portal; the Theban sites are part of the UNESCO-listed Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis.

What a 7-Day Dahabiya Sailing Includes

Sailing from the Red Sea coast to the Nile means the itinerary usually opens with Karnak Temple in Luxor before heading south, with stops along the way and a final look at Philae Temple and the Aswan High Dam area near the end of the trip.

Shorter Alternatives From Hurghada

If a full week aboard a dahabiya is more time than you have, our single-day Luxor trip from Hurghada covers the highlights in one long day. For a standard cruise-ship experience instead of a dahabiya, see our Luxor to Aswan Nile cruise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Hurghada to the Nile?

About four hours each way to Luxor, on a good desert road in a private air-conditioned vehicle. You do it once at the start and once at the end.

Is a nile cruise from hurghada better than a day trip?

If you have the days, yes. A day trip is eight hours of driving for six hours of sightseeing. This spends the same road time once and adds six nights on the river.

What is a dahabiya?

A traditional wooden sailing boat with a handful of cabins. It carries about a dozen guests, sails rather than motors where it can, and moors at small sites the large ships cannot reach.

What is included in the price?

Private transfers both ways, six nights full board in an en-suite cabin, soft drinks and water on board, a licensed Egyptologist on every excursion, all entrance fees and 24/7 support.

What is not included?

Flights, the Egypt entry visa, alcoholic drinks, the optional Abu Simbel excursion from Aswan, and gratuities.

When is the best time to go?

October to April for comfort. Summer sailings run and cost less, with excursions shifted to the cooler ends of the day.

Can I add Abu Simbel?

Yes. It is an easy add-on from Aswan at the end of the cruise, either as a long day or as an overnight. Tell us when you book.

Tour Plan

Expand All
Day 1 — Hurghada to Luxor, Karnak and embarkation

A morning pickup from your Hurghada hotel and a four-hour drive west across the desert to the Nile Valley. You reach Luxor in time for Karnak, the largest religious complex ever built, before boarding your dahabiya in the late afternoon. First dinner on deck.

Day 2 — The Theban west bank: Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut

Across to the west bank for the painted tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the terraces of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, with the Colossi of Memnon on the way back. The boat casts off in the afternoon and you sail south with the temples of Thebes behind you.

Day 3 — El Kab and the Temple of Horus at Edfu

El Kab is a walled town from the earliest dynasties with painted rock tombs cut into the cliff above it, and almost no visitors because the big ships cannot moor here. In the afternoon, Edfu: the most completely preserved temple in Egypt, dedicated to Horus and buried in sand until the 1860s.

Day 4 — Gebel el-Silsila and a night moored at Bisaw Island

Gebel el-Silsila is where the sandstone for Karnak, Luxor Temple and Edfu was quarried out of the riverbank. The chisel marks and the half-cut blocks are still there, along with rock chapels carved by the men who worked it. Overnight moored at Bisaw Island, with no other boat in sight.

Day 5 — Kom Ombo and the Daraw market

Kom Ombo is the double temple, split down the middle between Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris the falcon. Nearby, the market at Daraw is a working camel and livestock market rather than a tourist stop, and your guide will tell you honestly whether it is running on the day.

Day 6 — Aswan: Philae Temple and the High Dam

Arrival in Aswan. Philae, the island Temple of Isis reached by motorboat, and the High Dam that explains why Philae had to be moved at all. Final night on board.

Day 7 — Disembarkation and the drive back to Hurghada

Breakfast, disembarkation, and the drive back across the desert to your Hurghada hotel. If you would rather fly out of Aswan or continue to Cairo, tell us and we rearrange the last day.
