The internal leg is a flight rather than the overnight train. The train is cheaper and romantic in principle; in practice it costs you a night of sleep on a trip this short. We will book the train if you prefer it — but we will tell you what we think first.
Aswan opens the southern half: the island Temple of Isis at Philae, reached by motorboat, the High Dam, and a felucca hour on the river before you board. Abu Simbel is an optional add-on here and worth it if you can spare the day.
The Nile Leg
The middle of the 8 day egypt itinerary is three nights on a five-star cruise ship between Aswan and Luxor, sailing north with the current. One cabin, full board, and a temple each day: Kom Ombo shared between a crocodile god and a falcon god, then Edfu, the most completely preserved temple in Egypt.
The advantage of sailing in the middle of the trip is practical rather than romantic: for three days nobody packs a suitcase, checks out of anything or sits in a transfer. It is the rest built into the middle of a busy week.
Luxor
The last leg of the 8 day egypt itinerary begins moored at Luxor. The west bank comes first — the painted tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the terraces of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari — then Karnak, the largest religious complex ever built, and Luxor Temple. All of it is part of the UNESCO-listed Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis.

Good to Know Before You Go
October to April is the comfortable season for an 8 day egypt itinerary in Upper Egypt. May to September works and costs less, with sightseeing moved to early morning and late afternoon and the ship air-conditioned in between.
Pack light: the boat has laundry, and you will be glad of a small bag on the internal flight. Bring closed shoes for the tombs, a hat, high-factor sun protection and a layer for the deck after dark. A torch is useful in the Valley of the Kings.
Your passport is checked at the airport and at several sites. Entrance fees for everything in the itinerary are included, so nothing needs buying on the day except the optional extra tickets — Tutankhamun’s tomb and the Great Pyramid interior are the two most people add. Is 8 days enough for Egypt?

This 8 day Egypt itinerary covers the Old Kingdom pyramids, the Ptolemaic temples and the New Kingdom tombs at a pace of roughly one major site a morning. What eight days cannot also fit is the Western Desert, Abu Simbel and the Red Sea — those need a longer trip.

Night train or domestic flight to Aswan?
We book the flight by default. It is about an hour and leaves the day intact. The sleeper train is cheaper and an experience in itself, but on an eight-day trip it costs you a night of proper sleep. Either is available — ask and we quote both.
Are children welcome?
