Overview

Almost everyone sees the Theban west bank through a car window between air-conditioned stops. These private Luxor excursions by bike replace the vehicle with a bicycle, and the difference is not athletic — it is that you finally see what sits between the monuments.

The ground these Luxor excursions cover is flat. Genuinely flat — it is Nile floodplain, and the only climb on the route is the short ramp up to Hatshepsut. Between the tombs you ride past sugar cane, alfalfa, donkey carts and villages where people wave at you rather than sell you anything.

You cross the river in the morning, ride roughly 20 kilometres over the course of the day with long stops, break for a proper Egyptian lunch, and are back in Luxor by late afternoon.

Why Do These Luxor Excursions by Bike Rather Than by Car?

Three reasons to choose luxor excursions on two wheels, and none of them is exercise.

First, the pace. A car covers the gap between the Valley of the Kings and Medinet Habu in six minutes; a bicycle takes twenty, and those twenty minutes are the part of the day people describe when they get home.

Second, the timing. Luxor excursions by bike start earlier than any coach can. Bikes let us start earlier and reach the Valley of the Kings close to opening, before the coach convoy from the cruise ships arrives. The tombs are cut deep into the rock and the painted corridors are far better without forty people in them.

Third, the sites we can add. Medinet Habu, the mortuary temple of Ramses III, has the deepest surviving colour of any temple in Thebes and a fraction of the visitors, because it is the one most coach itineraries drop when they run late. On a bike we never run late.

Everything here is part of the UNESCO-listed Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis, and your guide is a licensed Egyptologist rather than a cycling leader who has memorised a script.

The Route

These Luxor excursions open with the Nile crossing and a light Egyptian breakfast on the west bank, then the ride out through the fields to the Valley of the Kings. Three tombs are included in the standard ticket; your guide picks the three worth your time on the day, and Tutankhamun and Seti I are available as extra tickets.

On to Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, the one temple on the west bank built into the cliff rather than in front of it. Lunch at a local restaurant, an hour out of the sun. Then Medinet Habu, and finally the Colossi of Memnon on the way back to the ferry.

Prefer the same sites in an air-conditioned vehicle? See our Luxor west bank day trip. Add the sunrise hot air balloon before the ride, the Karnak temple tour on the east bank, or a felucca ride at sunset. Everything is in Luxor tours and excursions, and longer routes in Egypt Tour Packages.

Good to Know Before You Go

Fitness required is low. The route is flat, the distance is about 20 kilometres spread over a full day, and we stop constantly. If you can ride a bicycle around a park you can do this. Hybrid bikes with gears and helmets are provided, and we size them to you on the morning.

October to April is the comfortable season for Luxor excursions on a bike. From May to September we start earlier and finish the riding before the worst of the heat, and we will say so honestly if we think your dates are too hot for a day in the saddle.

Bring closed shoes, a hat, sunglasses, high-factor sun protection and a small backpack. Water is provided throughout. Bring your passport for the tomb tickets, and a torch if you have one — some corridors are dim.

Children over about twelve manage these Luxor excursions comfortably on their own bikes. Younger children are better on the vehicle version, and we would rather steer you there than have a tired eight-year-old halfway to Medinet Habu. For current opening hours and ticket policy see Egypt’s official monuments portal.

Prefer a Standard Guided Tour Instead?

Cycling the West Bank isn't for everyone — it means covering real distance in the sun between sites. If you'd rather see the same Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and Colossi of Memnon by air-conditioned vehicle at a more relaxed pace, our standard Luxor West Bank day trip covers the same ground.

Combine With a Farm Day or Felucca Ride

To round out your time in Luxor with something slower-paced, consider our countryside farm day or an evening felucca ride on the Nile after a day of cycling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard are the Luxor excursions by bike?

Easy. The Theban west bank is Nile floodplain and almost entirely flat; the only rise is the short approach to Hatshepsut. Around 20 kilometres spread across a full day with long stops at every site.

What type of bikes are used?

Hybrid bikes with gears, maintained locally and sized to you on the morning. Helmets are included. Tell us your height when you book and we have the right frame waiting.

Can children join this tour?

Children from about twelve upward ride comfortably. For younger children we recommend the vehicle version of the same route instead — ask us and we quote it.

How many tombs are included?

Three tombs on the standard Valley of the Kings ticket, chosen by your guide on the day for what is open and least crowded. Tutankhamun and Seti I need separate tickets, available on site.

What is included in the price?

The bicycle and helmet, the Nile crossing, a licensed Egyptologist for the full day, entrance tickets to the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu, lunch at a local restaurant and water throughout.

What is not included?

Extra tomb tickets, drinks with lunch, gratuities and personal expenses.

Is it safe to cycle on the west bank?

Yes. The roads between the sites are quiet agricultural lanes rather than highways, a guide rides with the group throughout, and a support vehicle shadows the route in case anyone wants to stop riding.

When is the best time of year?

October to April. Summer rides run with an earlier start and a shorter afternoon, and cost less.

Tour Plan

Morning — Nile Crossing & Egyptian Breakfast

Your guide meets you for a short boat ride across the Nile to the West Bank, where your bikes are waiting. Start your adventure with a traditional Egyptian breakfast at a local café — fresh falafel sandwiches and mint tea. The perfect fuel before a day of riding through history.

Cycle to the Valley of the Kings

Ride through peaceful farmlands where locals tend their crops, children play, and donkeys pull wooden carts. The scenery shifts gradually from lush green fields to golden desert hills as you approach the Valley of the Kings — the final resting place of Egypt's greatest pharaohs.

Enter three royal tombs decorated floor to ceiling with colorful scenes from the afterlife. Optional visit to the Tomb of Tutankhamun available for an extra ticket on the day.

Temple of Hatshepsut

Pedal on to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari — built directly into the cliff face in elegant terraces.

Your guide shares the story of Hatshepsut's power, her trade expeditions to the land of Punt, and her bold legacy carved in stone. One of the most architecturally impressive sites on the West Bank.

Lunch — Authentic Egyptian Meal

Take a well-deserved break at a local family restaurant. Enjoy flavorful stews, grilled meats, and warm bread fresh from the oven. Real Egyptian hospitality in a cozy, unpretentious setting — no tourist menus here.

Medinet Habu Temple

After lunch, ride to Medinet Habu — the mortuary temple of Ramses III and one of the most underrated sites in all of Luxor.

Its massive walls are covered in battle scenes and religious carvings that still glow with color after 3,000 years. Your guide explains the stories of pharaonic battles, rituals, and the complex daily life that once filled these halls.
